Chess Genius App Reviews

ChessGenius from Richard Lang

... is an excellent chess player as usually from this high Quality programmer. I bought previous versions on Palm OS. This one plays better with fresh openings.

Simple and ... Genius !

For those who used to play on palm , chess genius is still one of best chess program ever . I will just complain about the graphics, pieces and boards are really UGLY ... Just have a look on other applications on iPad/iPhone (like Shredder for instance), we are in 2012!

the design for ipad is terrible

the app does not look nice enough on the ipad

Best chess program for iPhone/iPod

I wrote a comment and they listened and made some adjustments! The graphics may not be as good as cyber chess or caissa chess but the chess engine might be the best compared to chess classics, caissa chess, cyber ultimate chess and tchess and others. PGN feature is a good addition to chess genius superb qualities! Please increase the playing strength of chess genius if possible. I tried playing it with shredder 11 on my computer with a playing mode of 2 hours per game and shredder 11 won 3 games in 40 to 50 moves!

Happy user

If you are looking for the strongest chess engine on the iphone, this game for you. The interface is simple but effective. Higly recomended. Strong play and ease of use. Thats what real chess player want.

Great

Good engine - good for wide variety of play levels. Offers easy board setup. My one hesitation was the ugly graphics in the screenshots, but there is a more traditional, nice looking skin you can choose. Glad I bought it.

Still the king...

A lot of chess apps have come along since Chess Genius came out, but its still at the top of the pile. The interface is simple, usable, elegant - and the integration of analysis and naming openings is the best there is. (My one request/wish would be some indication of when you go "out of book" without having to turn on full analysis, but thats a relatively small beef.) This is still the only app that lets you import PGN game files/databases from a URL (all you need is a free Dropbox or Syncplicity account, for instance), so you can take your favourite grandmaster games or openings repetoire with you wherever you go. FANTASTIC!

Excellent!

This is a great app. Good graphics with none of the annoying sound effects of some of the other chess apps. I gave it 4 instead of 5 because you cant set the ELO level and does not give you a rating which is kinds fun to have. You can set playing strength but not in the context of specific game time.

Not good

Graphical improvement is needed. Very bad quality. Opening lines are cut in the landscape mode, Chess pieces are not that HD as it says. and when playing you can feel that the app is little buggy when moving a piece. More importantly, no updates to fix these problems. They just add support to the new iOS and wait for other buyers. I think developer is quite a bit lazy. Just consider buying other apps.

No elo

There isnt elo selection There is no strong selection.

iOS 6 incompatibility

Main menu could be showed. But all the buttons dont work. Reinstalling application or rebooting ipad hadnt make any result. iOS = 6, device = iPad 2 Please, update your application with fixed bugs! Thank you!

Best Chess APP. A huge improvement over the others.

- A truly GREAT user interface: The Interface makes moving peices absolutely foolproof and very pleasurable. Very creatively done, and the first iphone chess app Ive found that really succeeeds in this way. - Powerful Engine: This is a big benefit for players at any strength. If you want to dial down the playing strength, Genius will be able to move SO much faster than other engines while playing at a given level of actual playing strength. That speed adds greatly to the joy of the experience. The improved playing strength is also great for finding the real solutions to real world chess problems. - Excellent features- Many of which Ive not found in the competitors. They did a beautiful job on stepping forward and back over the move history, and of easily getting the iphone to take over the players position whenever desired. Ive used ChessGenius for over 10 years, first on Palm, and then windows mobile, and Im delighted to have Genius now on the iPhone, and so beautifully adapted. Its Must Have Application.

As good as the reviews indicate

Really quite amazing. The levels of expertise are well crafted. Implementation is robust. And friendly. And intuitive. 5 stars!

Challenging and Rewarding!

Ive played this app for many years on mobile platforms. It has literally helped me learn chess. Im so glad to see it on the iPhone platform. I purchased the other chess applications from the iTunes store, because I didnt think Chess Genius was going to be ported to the iPhone. All of the chess apps have thier strengths and weaknesses, but for me the other titles are video games, while Chess Genius is a portable learning companion.

Fantastic

Best!!!!!!!

This is the one!

I love chess programs on my Mac and Palm and even did on my older Windows Mobile phone. Now that my contract ended with my old carrier I immediately bought my iPhone and started to look foir a chess game. What a disappointing assortment of the usual suspects. Interface problems, poor play, 3D graphics that might look good but during play the pieces would hide each other or become hard to see, not many options to adjust play or display -- I downloaded a few and regretted it and finally decided to just wait. Wow, am I glad I did because CHESS GENIUS is the best chess program ever on the Palm and Windows Smartphone. Now that it is on the iPhone everyone here can enjoy its crisp graphics, easily and widely-adjustable features and, of course, game play unmatched by any other chess-playing engine on a mobile device. This is it, this is the one. If youre a patzer happy with just looking at "somethin cool" on your screen go get a program with candy-floss graphics. But if you are a Player, if you love chess, if you like a display designed not to distract but to involve -- download this soon. Heck, download it today.

Mid level player

This is my 3rd hand held chess application, 1st on the iPhone. The graphics are great, and the set up very efficient. My only complaint is that I did not know the game title was a prerequisite for the buyer! By that I mean, the levels of play are not scaled to allow progressive learning; you must be a chess whiz to stay in the game at any level. Even at the lowest level ("0-Easiest") the chess engine knows some pretty sophisticated maneuvers, i.e. "en passant" with a pawn, and it never makes the sort of mistake a human beginner (or intermediate!) would make. True, you can take back moves, and the game will even tutor you with the advice that a move was a bad one. BUT, by the time you get that warning, the only way to stay in the game is to surrender the controls to the engine for every single subsequent move. You are already backed into a corner where the master has calculated every permutation. Accept the advice to take back the bad move, then make any move on your own in a following step, and you will just be slammed in a different way. So any but the most proficient chess player will end up not just defeated, but crushed by a master over and over again, an experience that does not help teach an advancing player. I found the PocketChess for Palms, and even Apples iChess instructive. I lost many early games, but each was a "close" game, and I eventually worked up to become a better player, occasionally beating the engine, and then setting it for a higher level of play. With this engine, every game is a loss to the best. Just too darn advanced.

Great app

Very nice features. Very good play. NOT beginner friendly. Lower levels are quite difficult.

Powerful chess app

Ive used Chess Genius on other mobile platforms, and have come to expect a robust, powerful chess game which fits the platforms UI. Chess Genius for the iPhone does this easily! The engine its based on has a great history, and has proven to be extremely solid. • The interface is simple yet attractive. No 3d, outer space games with wizards... Just great chess. • Flexible levels. The lower levels are moderately strong but beatable, the upper levels will kill you unless youre quite strong, and its easy to choose a level. • It doesnt have an idiot mode. It plays chess, and it uses all the rules. I think this is a plus myself... YMMV

Very strong program!

Thank you, Mr. Lang from bringing Chess Genus to the iPhone! Its the strongest chess application and easy to use! Ive played a dozen demonstration games against Palm HIARCS and it holds HIARCS even. Its a lot of fun on the iPhone and I hope Mr Lang ports his PC version to the Mac next!
